My Electric Bill goes way up during the summer, what can I do?

Don’t just pay that bill and get another next month. Consider having your equipment evaluated by Foothills Mechanical. We can make recommendations for needed Maintenance, some Energy Control thermostats, or more Efficient Equipment. The Higher Efficiency Equipment being installed today can reduce your cooling bill by 30% or more. I replaced my Heat Pump in 2012 and reduced my electric bill by $100/month during the cooling and heating season. We can help you do the same.

What temperature should I set my thermostat during the Summer?

I recommend setting your Air Conditioning Temperature somewhere between 72 and 78. Pick the highest temperature where you can be comfortable. This is different for everybody. I advise against setting the temperature too low, say below 70. When the house is cold in the summer, the indoor humidity will actually rise, this is because the temperature in the house approaches the dew point; the point where moisture in the air will begin to form droplets of water. This gives you a cold but clammy feeling which is less comfortable. Remember, the higher you set your cooling temperature, the lower your electric bill. Everybody likes a lower electric bill!

Is my heat pump still working when it’s this cold outside?

Heat Pumps are not designed to keep your house warm when its bitter cold outside.  They are designed for a moderate climate, which we usually have.  When the temperature goes into the single digits and stays there a while, your heat pump can’t do the job.  As the temperature starts to fall in the house, usually 2 degrees below setpoint, the backup strip heat should kick in to help.  If it still can’t keep your home tolerable, there may be something wrong.  Foothills Mechanical can help.  Call us at 856-0030.

I have high humidity causing a musty odor in the basement. What can I do?

During the Summer Months when the humidity outside is high, indoor air problems begin to arise. Musty Smell, Mildew on things, Wet Spots in the basement, etc… get worse. I recommend having a Heating and Air Professional look at your situation. Air Conditioning tune up may be the answer. There may be some other solutions to the problem such as installing a dehumidifier. Call Foothills to help diagnose and treat these conditions.

Are there any Energy Tax Credits for 2014?

No.  The Federal Energy Tax Credits and The Tennessee Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program both expired at the end of 2011.  The Federal Energy Tax Credit was extended on a much limited basis in 2012 and 2013.  They have not been extended into 2014 at this time.
